30 July 2025 (sunny, warm morning, bit of drizzle in arvo, rain at night) 53km
Can't believe another month is nearly over. Another thing I can't believe, is how bloody close we were to the town clock and church steeple.
Less than fifty metres from the noise which of course went every hour, with a single chime on the half hour.
So, let me think....
Luxury hotel....
Freecamp in the woods....
Any campground with people...
Why am I doing this again...?
In all honesty, the hotel was very nice.
Woke this morning and had a chat with Briana and also with Brody. Gear was packed ready for check out at 10am and we were on the way to Tolmin, Slovenia.
Bit of climbing to do today and the UV is supposed to be high, so we'll slip slop slap the sunscreen on.
Only had some fruit before we left the hotel, but called into the supermarket on the way out to get our breakfast, which will be lunch today.
Great news on the England girls winning the Euros. Sad news about Dan Nganeko. Another life lost in a senseless act of violence.
Out of Cividale with another look at that gorgeous view from the bridge. Now heading for Slovenia.
Took a secondary road to begin with, which wound its way into a gorge and it was here that we crossed over the river and joined the main road.
We were slightly worried about how busy it would be, but it was like a country lane.
Although we were climbing today, it didn't feel like anything, not so the case tomorrow with 1750 metres of climbing.
We had some lunch at a busy intersection opposite a Pizzaria, out here in the middle of nowhere.
We encountered some drizzle for a while and thought about putting the covers on, but by the time we'd questioned it, the rain had gone.
The scenery through here was pretty much bush and hills. Could hardly see the river.
Came upon the village of Kobarid, a nice little haven in the middle of nowhere.
Bought two ice creams, (purely for investigative purposes. Disappointingly, still a similar price to everywhere else) and carried on.
We rounded a bend and we're stopped in our tracks by the beautiful turquoise waters of the Soca river flowing underneath an old stone bridge. This was obviously a well known tourist hot spot judging by the many cars, camper vans and pedestrians going across this small bridge. Of course, it was only the cyclists and pedestrians who could get good photos of this stunning setting.
Couldn't swim in it as too high up and no way of getting to it further down, without bush bashing.
We contented ourselves with the shots we took.
Noticed as we continued towards Tolmin, that all the traffic was coming toward us and we didn't need to worry about stuff from behind.
Made it a lot more enjoyable.
The weather now was sun and cloud, but nothing like what the forecasters had predicted.
At 3pm, we arrived in Tolmin.
The Soca river is definitely the star of this area and rightly so. Rain was threatening so we didn't linger long in Tolmin itself and after a trip to the supermarket, we cycled across the river to the camp. The weather now was drizzle and looking as though we might get very wet.
Dark clouds moving over the peaks. The camp was about a kilometre from the supermarket, so we got a move on.
A rather surly young female was on reception. Obviously nothing to smile about in her life...so she didn't.
As she asked me for Euro 35, she still couldn't raise a smile even at my expense. Julia complimented her on her English and despite herself, a smile slipped out but she quickly shut it down again in case anyone noticed.
Told us to camp where we wanted and we went to check out camp.
As it was still drizzling, we sat on some benches under a shed enjoying a drink and some nuts and chips.
I know I'm moaning, but this camp is not a 35 Euro camp. It's a 17- 22. max. Bonus for us though was the power plug we found in the shed so we could keep everything topped up.
Suddenly out of nowhere, it was thirty degrees and stinking hot.
I lubed and tidied the bikes whilst Ju had a shower, then I went for mine and did some washing in there.
Later came dinner from a can.
We are still trying to figure out what it was, but it was edible.
Finished the evening looking at one half of the sky in blue and the other a dark grey
Roll the dice and lets see what we get tomorrow.
Shame about the Bells ( now you know what Quasy Modo was complaining about !)
ReplyDeleteGreat bridges and river to photo, Hope the mozzies have let you alone Ju its not funny when the itching goes on for so long. Well done finding those side roads to give you some quiet riding. So another country to explore. stay safe
